The name? ‘Narrative Transport’ is the best description I’ve read of that wonderful experience when deeply immersed in a book, so much so that the external world is largely irrelevant. I am often in this state, and I love it.
The term comes from cognitive neuroscience, which has been studying what happens in the brain when we engage with Story. Things happen, deep inside our cortex, and we enter a different brain state. It’s a state where we can experience different worlds and different lives, learning and growing.
Fiction is simulation that we run on the software of our brains.
